Major League Baseball issued a 60-game schedule Tuesday night that will start July 23 or 24 in empty ballparks as the sport tries to push ahead amid the coronavirus following months of acrimony.

Major League Baseball plans to unilaterally issue a 60-game schedule for its shortest season since 1878 after the players' association rejected a negotiated deal of the same length, putting the sport on track for a combative and possibly unhappy return to the field amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement released Friday afternoon, the Phillies confirmed that 5 players and 3 staff members who were working at their spring training facility in Clearwater, Florida have tested positive for the coronavirus.

MLB players hoped to play through until at least November, but owners believe the already-shortened season should only go on until October. Dr. Anthony Fauci said the major leagues would be wise to wrap up the postseason in September.

MLB's action was described to The Associated Press by a person familiar with the details who spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement was authorized.

Baseball players told Major League Baseball additional talks to start the season during the coronavirus pandemic are futile and said owners should order a return to work, which likely would spark lengthy litigation and the sport’s return to labor wars.

A rookie at the major league minimum would keep about 47% of his original salary this year while multimillionaire stars Mike Trout and Gerrit Cole would lose more than 77% under a sliding-scale proposal by big league teams that players found “extremely disappointing.”

Major League Baseball will look somewhat like high school ball this year under protocols to deal with the new coronavirus, with showers at ballparks discouraged and players possibly arriving in uniform, like they did when they were teenagers.

Researchers received 6,237 completed surveys from employees of 26 clubs. That led to 5,754 samples obtained in the U.S. on April 14 and 15 and 5,603 records that were used. The survey kit had a 0.5% false positive rate.

Major League Baseball operations had been previously suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it was unclear when, and if, gameplay would resume in 2020.

Marte played for the A's from 2008 to 2012.

The cancellation was prompted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
