Approved schools can provide certificates for license tests

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizonans who complete a state-approved driving school's training program may be able to skip having to take written and behind-the-wheel license tests at state Motor Vehicle Division offices.

The Motor Vehicle Division says the requirement for using the private-sector option starts with attendance at a department-contracted school.

Schools must provide at least 30 hours of classroom training for students to get a waiver of the state-administered written exam and 10 hours of behind-the-wheel training to skip the road test.

But MVD says some students who present training completion certificates at MVD offices when applying for licenses will still be required take the written or road exam.

According to MVD, the random testing will be used to measure schools' instruction.

ADOT says there are over approved 50 schools around Arizona.
