Driver killed by driving head on into lightrail pole in central Phoenix

Phoenix Police on scene of the deadly accident early Sunday morning trying to figure out what happened.

Police say witnesses told them a white truck was headed north on Central Avenue early Sunday morning.

Around 4 a.m., the driver jumped the curb, flew onto the lightrail tracks and ended up smashing right into a pole just south of Encanto Boulevard.

"Unfortunately due to the injuries sustained, he was deceased," said Lt. Jeffery Fields of Phoenix Police.

Police say the male driver was the only one in the truck, and don't believe at this time that any other cars were involved in the deadly crash.

"I've been doing this for about 20 years, and the lightrail has been here about 10 years. It's very infrequent that something like this happens," Fields said.

Lightrail service along Central was interrupted for a few hours, and that portion of Central was shut down for the police investigation.
