Fatal shooting at Sprouts store: Family wants answers, asks for surveillance video

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - The family of a man shot and killed by Scottsdale Police want an explanation. They want to know what led up to an officer opening fire on a 24-year-old.

Police say the suspect pulled a knife on their officers, but the family of Dylan Liberti wants to independently verify that story. Their attorney's own investigators have been scouring the scene, trying to piece together what happened.

"Our investigators have been out there canvassing. We have spoken to local businesses. We have reason to believe that someone did videotape on their cell phone from the parking lot," said the family's attorney, David Rubin.

The attorney is asking for anyone who may have video to come forward.

Last Wednesday night, officers were called for a welfare check when they contacted Liberti in a busy shopping center at 92nd Street and Shea. They say he refused to follow commands and confronted officers with a knife. That's when they opened fire.

"Our investigators have been out there canvassing. we have spoken to local businesses. we have reason to believe that someone did videotape on their cell phone from the parking lot," said Rubin.

Liberti's family has set up a Go Fund Me account and their attorney says they want an explanation from police.

"They are shocked and they are in deep grief," said Rubin.

Liberti has had run-ins with police in the past. Scottsdale Police tell us they are committed to thoroughly investigating this case.

The department welcomes and desires any information that the public feels would assist them in this process. Scottsdale Police also say the officer who opened fire was not wearing a body camera, but his partner, who was there, was wearing one. At this point, that video is not being released.
