Man sentenced to natural life in prison for killing family

PHOENIX (AP) - A judge in Phoenix has sentenced a man to natural life in prison for the killings of his parents and a brother in Wittman in June 2008.

A Maricopa County Superior Court spokesman says Judge Bruce Cohen sentenced 33-year-old Virgil Marvel Togstad III on Friday on his jury convictions for first-degree murder and misconduct involving weapons.

Sheriff's deputies went to the family home in Wittman after Togstad told a dispatcher that he committed the killings because the victims were "not his family."

Deputies found the bodies of the three dead family members. At least three other people escaped the home unharmed.

The girlfriend of Togstad's brother told authorities that before the deaths took place, the family had been shooting a BB gun at a target.
