Suspect arrested for breaking into Phoenix Safeway & setting fire

A man was arrested after breaking into a Phoenix supermarket through the ceiling and setting a small fire in the store.

The suspect climbed into the ceiling of a Safeway grocery store at 32nd Street and Thunderbird Road at 12:30am, according to Phoenix Police spokesperson Officer James Holmes.

The suspect crashed through the ceiling and fell to the floor, Holmes says. The noise alerted workers at the Safeway store to the break-in.

Phoenix Fire crews were called to the scene to put out a small fire the man had set. The suspect who broke into the store suffered an ankle injury and was rushed to the hospital to be treated.
