TSA finds folding knife hidden in prosthetic leg at Honolulu airport

An eagle-eyed off-duty law enforcement officer certainly stepped up after seeing where a passenger had hidden a knife prior to trying to get onto a flight in Hawaii.

Big picture view:

While at the Honolulu International Airport, the officer noticed the passenger sneak a knife into a prosthetic leg, the Transportation Security Administration explained in a statement. A TSA officer was alerted and the passenger flagged for additional screening at a checkpoint.

After agents watched a video that showed the passenger slipping something into his prosthetic leg, the leg was taken to be X-rayed, the TSA continued. The TSA agents reported spotting a folding knife that was stashed on the underside of the heel of the foot.

"This incident is a powerful reminder that situational awareness is essential at every moment—not just during routine screening," said Hawaii TSA Federal Security Director Nanea Vasta.
