Voter registration deadline Oct. 10th, despite holiday

PHOENIX (AP) -- Arizonans in all but one county must be registered by Monday if they want to vote in November even though it is a state and federal holiday.

Republican Secretary of State Michele Reagan refused to extend the deadline despite calls from state and national Democrats to add a day because of Columbus Day. There's no mail service Monday so the last day to mail a registration form was Saturday.

Reagan spokesman Matt Roberts says county recorders in all but Mojave County are open Monday, so voters can drop off their forms. Mohave County extended the deadline until Tuesday.

Would-be voters can also register though the servicearizona.com website.

Reagan's predecessor extended the deadline by a day in 2012, but Roberts says she believes the law doesn't allow the extension.
