Charter school students design STEM playground

Thousands of students around the Valley had the day off for the veterans day holiday. And one group of Valley students take part in a building project that affects everyone.

It's all about giving back on Veterans Day and the students and staff at Western School of Science and Technology took part.

"We believe it's so important for students to be connected to the neighborhood and by working to really effect change and demonstrating that it's possible they're doing just that today," said Principal Peter Boyle.

Students have been designing the playground since September.

"We're painting and choosing our own colors to paint our shades, and we might even build a new structure that is capable of blocking the sun even more," said Efrain Ibarra.

The goal is to give kids from the neighborhood a safe place to play. Construction is expected to be finished by February.
