MCSO deputies shoot pit bull

MESA, Ariz. (AP/KSAZ) -- Maricopa County authorities say a deputy shot a pit bull at a Mesa home after the animal charged toward officers. Family members tell Fox 10 news the animal later passed away.

The incident happened Saturday morning near Ellsworth Road and University Drive.

Sheriff's deputies say they were preparing to serve a search warrant at the home.

They say they were asking a woman in the driveway if anyone was inside when the pit bull went past a screen door.

Deputies say they were on the sidewalk when the dog advanced toward them.

A deputy shot the animal fearing for officers' safety.

Authorities say the dog suffered a wound in the cheek but family members say the animal passed away.
