PHOENIX (KSAZ) - For the past few decades, meat consumption in the United States has seen a steady decline, according to green lifestyle website One Green Planet.
According to recent studies, 30 percent of Americans are seeking out plant-based alternatives to traditionally meaty dishes. The plant-based meat market is set to reach $5.2 billion by 2020 and could make up one-third of the market by 2050, according to the website.
That's good news for places like Nami, a Phoenix vegan eatery, which offers sweet, savory and gluten-free choices near 7th Street and McDowell Avenue.
"A lot of times, people think that vegans can't eat anything, and that they're angry, and that they're going to jump down people's throats if they eat a steak," said Rachel Prickett, an employee.
"[Nami] allows us to have an open dialogue with our non-vegan customers and give them the options," said Prickett.
