Phoenix New Times and Tempe bar facing backlash for sexually explicit advertisement

The Phoenix New Times and a bar in Tempe are facing backlash on social media after a sexually explicit ad appeared in the print edition of the weekly paper that mocked the "Me Too" movement.

The ad published in last Thursday's edition of the Phoenix New Times shows three stick figures in a sexual position, and the hashtag "Me Too."

It promotes a performance by a band named "Slowpoke" at Yucca Tap Room in Tempe.

An article by the New Times says, "The ad was place and paid for by a band member, who is also in charge of digital ad sales at Phoenix New Times."

It also says, "The editorial and advertising departments are completely separate."

Senior management say they regret the publication of the ad and have suspended the employee.

Yucca Tap Room says it had no knowledge of the ad prior to its distribution and has removed "Slowpoke" from Saturday's "Winter Formal" lineup.

It says a portion of the proceeds from the show will be donated to an organization that aids victims of sexual assault.
