Police arrest man in connection with 37-year-old cold case
GLENDALE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - 37 years later, Glendale cold case detectives have made an arrest in her murder case.
Glendale Police say on that Wednesday evening in 1978, Schmidt had gone shopping at Valley West Mall near 59th Avenue and Northern. Just after 8:30 a jogger discovered her slumped in her car stopped on 55th Avenue south of Northern. Back then it was a secluded, dark, and rural area.
Schmidt was a well-known and well-liked student, she was shot several times and later died.
Geisler says physical evidence found in the car led them to Edward Meinhold six weeks ago. Meinhold was found in Bristol Virginia, but he had lived in Glendale at the time of the murder and lived a short distance from the crime scene.
In 1978 Meinhold, who police say did not know Schmidt, would have been just 17-years-old. Many hope more answers will come as to what exactly happened and why. He is now awaiting extradition back to Arizona.
