Student taken into custody after gun found on campus

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Phoenix Police were contacted on Tuesday after it was brought to the attention of North Canyon High School administrators that a student on campus had a handgun.

It's not the first time this has happened here. The school was placed o lockdown back in May of this year, after police found a handgun in a 15-year-old student's backpack.

Statement from the Paradise Valley Unified School District:

"First and foremost, we want to let you know that our students and staff members on the North Canyon High School campus are safe.

Earlier this afternoon, it was brought to the attention of school administrators that a student on campus had a handgun in possession. We immediately called the Phoenix Police Department, and the police arrived on scene. The student in question was apprehended and has been placed in police custody.

At PVSchools, students are held accountable for their actions as outlined in the Parent/Student Handbook. If a student is found to be in violation of a policy, the student is disciplined accordingly. Due to the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA), PVSchools cannot provide any details about the student in question, including the disciplinary action(s) that will be taken.

In closing, PVSchools and North Canyon High School are cooperating fully with the Phoenix Police Department on the investigation and will provide the police with any support requested. As this is an ongoing police investigation, any additional questions you may have about the case should be referred to the Phoenix Police Department."
