1 arrested, 1 critically hurt after brutal fight on SR51

Part of the State Route 51 was shut down Sunday morning after an unusual series of events.

Phoenix police and DPS troopers responded to the SR51 and Northern after two adult men got into a fight while driving down the highway.

The two men reportedly got into the fight at about 3:30 a.m. Troopers say the passenger may have then deliberately caused the vehicle to crash into the center barrier. They say he then beat up the driver.

The passenger was arrested. The driver was rushed to the hospital in extremely critical condition.

Southbound SR51 was shut down for hours at Northern and it reopened at about 8 a.m.
