16-year-old killed in shooting near high school in Fairfield

Less than 24 hours after a deadly shooting near the campus of Armijo High School in Fairfield, on Saturday some students had to regain their focus and concentrate on college entrance exams. Senior Elijah Ibrahim was one of the hundreds of students back at the school to take their SATs. He admitted he was still trying to process the events of the previous day.

"I was able to put that aside for the SAT, but it was really eye opening, and astonishing to see something like this happen," Ibrahim said. "Just the fact that something like this could happen this close to where so many people were, during our home game, that was really saddening."

Police said on Friday just after 5 p.m. a gun fight broke out between two groups at the corner of Bell Avenue and Washington Street, just two blocks from the high school. A 16-year-old and an 18-year-old were both shot and taken to the hospital. The 16-year-old died from his injuries and the 18-year-old was listed in critical condition.

A neighbor, Elizabeth Cano, heard the gunshots and was one of the first people to arrive at the scene. "We were just standing there in shock. We didn't know what to do, so we just waited for the ambulance to come," Cano recalled.

Police arrested one suspect at a home near to the shooting scene. Investigators said a second suspect went running toward Armijo High School where the shooting had interrupted a home football game against Vallejo's Jesse Bethel High School. Police said the suspect ran into the school's gymnasium where 500 students and parents were being held on lockdown. Police quickly located and arrested the suspect, who was not armed. Fairfield police have not released the names or ages of the suspects. It's unclear if either one is a student at Armijo High School.
