Phoenix drug trafficker sentenced to 25 years in prison

PHOENIX (AP) - A judge has sentenced a 35-year-old Phoenix man to 25 years in prison on drug-trafficking charges.

Authorities say a gunshot first alerted Phoenix Police to Gilberto Martinez's residence in March 2014 after a failed home invasion.

Martinez wrestled over a gun with one of the armed suspects who later fled. Martinez then threw cash, drugs and firearms in a truck and lead Phoenix Police on a high speed chase that ended when Martinez abandoned the truck and hid outside a nearby residence.

Authorities arrested Martinez and later seized nearly 15 pounds of cocaine, 200 pounds of marijuana, 10 firearms and $500,000 in cash from Martinez's home and truck.

Martinez had eight previous convictions including two for drug dealing.

U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton sentenced Martinez on Monday.
