Phoenix woman gets prison in death of her 2-year-old son

PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix woman has been sentenced to three years in prison for negligent homicide in the death of her 2-year-old son.

Wendy Rogel-Pagasa was sentenced Thursday. She had pleaded guilty in November to negligent homicide and child abuse in the February 2012 death of Jorge Zamora-Rogel.

Police say the boy was fatally beaten by Rogel-Pagasa's boyfriend, Juan Garcia, after the toddler refused to eat his dinner.

Garcia was sentenced last month to 25 years in prison in the case.

Court records show Garcia slammed the boy's head against a wall and then the floor multiple times after pulling him out of a bedroom by his ear.

Authorities say the 21-year-old Rogel-Pagasa allegedly didn't seek medical help for her son for about two hours and he was dead when responders arrived.
