Police: Car-theft suspect cut and stabbed himself

PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police say a car-theft suspect who said he didn't want to go back to prison cut and stabbed himself in the neck before officers were able to subdue him.

Police say the 31-year-old Shelton Larry Boone was arrested Thursday and booked into jail on suspicion of resisting arrest and other charges after receiving medical treatment for the wounds he suffered himself May 8.

According to police, Boone wounded himself, punched a police dog and threatened officers when police tried to arrest him after he drove and then ran from a stolen car that was under surveillance.

State Department of Corrections records indicate Boone previously served prison sentences on convictions for drug offenses, car theft and other crimes.

Boone did not have an attorney during an initial court appearance.
