St. Mary's Food Bank gets large donation for the holidays

More than 50,000 pounds of protein was given to St. Mary's Food Bank on Tuesday.

"They're packages of all sorts of pork, we're the largest pork company in the world, so ham, bacon, sausage, ribs," Dennis Pittman said.

Dennis Pittman is the senior director for Hunger Relief for Smithfield Foods and this donation happens several times across the country.

"We're a food company, we feed people, that's what we do," he said.

The food is given to places that need it most and Phoenix is on top of the list.

"The protein will be put in baskets with other food and boxes where they will have canned goods, as well as fresh produce along with protein," Tom Kertis said.

Those who receive the meats are especially thankful to have it for the holidays.

"They love it when we have these types of products in their food baskets," Kertis said. "It makes a big difference."

On October 12th, you can get into the Arizona State Fair for free if you bring four cans of food. All donations will go to St. Mary's Food Bank.
