Made In Arizona: Local brownie company owners talk about its sweet beginnings

PHOENIX (FOX 10) -- It can be argued that Fairytale Brownies is one of the Valley's sweetest companies.

The products they make, brownies, are sweet, soft, made of chocolate, and basically impossible to resist. They contain no preservatives, no artificial colors, and it's all natural.

"We do all the baking, the shipping, the packing, the ingredients," said David Kravetz.

So, what's the secret behind the brownies? They're homemade.

"It's my mom's recipe," said Kravetz . "She used to make them growing up. When I went away to college, she used to send trays of brownies. Eileen would come visit me, we would share the brownies. So we've been eating these brownies our entire lives."

Kravetz and Eileen Spitalny go way back. They were in the same kindergarten class.

"We are still friends. Best friends after all these years," said Spitalny. "And we're still in business."

Much like Kravetz's family recipe, it turned out to be the perfect balance, but there was a bit of a learning curve at the start.

"We just had no idea we were starting a manufacturing business. We thought we were just starting a brownie business," said Spitalny. "If you want brownies to be consistent and then go from baking hundreds to thousands to millions, you know it's production."

Now in its 27th year, the two estimate they've made about 70 million brownies. That's about five million every year. With such a big production, they've amped up the original recipe. David's mom baked with chocolate from the grocery store. Nowadays, the chocolate comes straight from Belgium.

All the brownies are then packed inside a royal-purple colored box, and shipped.
