Arizona Legislature to hold special wildfire funding session

Gov. Doug Ducey formally called for the special session after announcing last week during a tour of two large fires burning in south-central Arizona that he planned the session to focus on the issue.

The Slate Fire burning northwest of Flagstaff grew again overnight, but it is now 17% contained. Windy conditions contributed to the growth of the fire, which has now burned more than 6,000 acres. Highway 180 remains closed between mileposts 235 and 248 because of the fire.

Ducey planned to take an aerial tour of the two fires, be briefed by fire officials and visit a Red Cross shelter for evacuees before holding a press conference, his office said.

Slate Fire burning near Flagstaff grows to 5,000 acres

The Slate Fire which is burning northwest of Flagstaff has grown to 5,000 acres with zero containment. The fire sparked on Monday and crews are currently battling flames on the west side of Highway 180 in the Kaibab National Forest.
