A witness had been driving near Blake Ranch and Stephan roads east of Kingman when he reportedly saw a car stranded in a wash, 40 yards away from the nearest roadway.
The Mohave County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue says someone who was riding an ATV in a wash called them to report that they saw an upside-down Chevrolet truck with a body inside.
"The two subjects allegedly attempted to gain access into a bedroom, at which time a single gunshot was fired at the two from within the bedroom," the sheriff's office said.
A construction crew spotted the 42-year-old woman in a running wash in Golden Valley. “[She was] holding onto a sign post in rushing water up to her waist,” the department said.
The victims have been identified as 73-year-old Retta Atkins and 50-year-old Darren Vanhouten.
